Therapy and coaching differ in a couple of important ways. Therapists are licensed mental health professionals. Depending on their training, therapists can provide diagnosis and treatment for mental health conditions. In therapy you often address psychological issues that impact your daily functioning. You will explore your past and how that impacts your life at present. Therapists use various techniques aimed at helping you restore your mental health.
Coaches are trained and accredited through organisations such as ICF and AC. Coaches are not psychologists but coach training does draw inspiration from psychology and mindfulness. In this regard, similarly to therapy coaching may explore thoughts, emotions and behaviour. However, coaches can’t diagnose or treat any mental health conditions and stay rooted in the present moment. So, while therapists help restore mental health, coaches help optimize mental wellness to help unlock and fulfill your potential.
So you could say, therapy is like healing for your mind and coaching is like working it out! 🧠

Coaching is typically offered in six session blocks. Whether you need one block, several blocks or ongoing support is dependent on your individual needs. I also offer one-off sessions which can have a big impact as well as offering a taste of what coaching is all about. There is no right or wrong amount of time to engage in coaching and there will be regular reviews to help you decide.

Standard sessions are typically between 60 and 90 minutes. One off sessions can last longer and I also offer shorter check-ins via WhatsApp chat/voice notes in between sessions if desired.

Coaching is largely conversational and specialises in facilitating a process of discovery. It is mostly non-directive, which means the coach does not give advice in the way that a consultant or a mentor would. However, drawing from the teachings of behavioural psychology and mindfulness, there might be moments that feel like learning, and activities to participate in. Coaching is collaborative and can only succeed with your active participation and engagement!
