“what’s for tea?
When I was a child I was probably the fussiest eater you could imagine. I would pretty much only eat white or green food (macaroni cheese with a baked potato and peas was my favourite). Fast-forward 30 years and I know eat a full rainbow of colours and consider cooking my main passion.
Three years ago I quit my job, hit the road to travel the world and live life fuelled by my passions. One of those passions is plant-based cooking, but my own food journey has not been straightforward.
I have taken my own experience of transitioning to a plant-based diet, pared it with my passion for cooking and brought it all together with my training as a coach to help you spark your own plant-based revolution.
A little later I started dating someone with a dairy intolerance, and that was when the plant-based revolution began. She didn’t eat meat and hated cooking, so rather than see this as a problem, I decided to embrace the challenge and only cook dairy and meat free when she came over. I was shocked to find how fun and easy it was. I was also shocked to discover the harm that the meat and dairy industry causes to our planet, animals and to our own health and so and over time, I quit eating meat and eventually dairy. Eggs were the toughest to crack (pun intended), but once I had perfected my Tofu Scramble I felt like nothing could stop me!
I’ve always enjoyed cooking for others, so trying out plant-based recipes on friends and family was fun and seeing their reactions to how tasty plant-based food could be sparked something in me. What if I could help other people go plant-based?
By this time I was in the middle of sparking my own personal revolution (which you can read about here), I knew that I wanted to share my passion for food and make a big impact on helping protect and restore the natural world. When as part of that mission I retrained as a life coach, I knew that food was going to be a big part of it.
Food For Thought
By the time I went off to university I had broadened my tastes slightly and my mum sent me off with a little black book of recipes in an attempt to ensure I didn’t just eat takeaways every night (it didn’t really work).
Over the years I flip-flopped between diets without much thought. It wasn't until I did a ski season and ended up as the chef in a high-end chalet that I developed a passion for being in the kitchen. It was an experience that was intense, demanding and gruelling but rather than put it me off, my passion for cooking exploded and I began to pay more attention to what I ate. As well as hungry skiers, in the spring I catered for some yoga retreats and that’s when I began to play around more with plants, diversifying my palette and explores cuisines from around the world.
